MASONRY

Masonry repair

Masonry repair consists of patching and plugging gaps and cracks in the mortar. It also involves removing and replacing old mortar or bricks that have lost their structural integrity. If you have stone that needs repair, masonry repair covers that, too.

Stone construction

Stone masonry always has stood for permanence. Anything properly made of stone outlasts the same thing made of any other material, even concrete with steel mesh imbedded. But one must be certain of one’s work. Depending on the size of the job, it can take weeks to repair a large mistake. Stone masonry differs entirely from brick or block masonry, where every layer must lie in a straight line, where there must be square and level units and mortar joints that are uniform. The main reasons for building with stone are its beauty, endurance, strength, and mass.

Concrete block and concrete construction

A Concrete block is one of several precast concrete products used in construction. The term precast refers to the fact that the blocks are formed and hardened before they are brought to the job site. Most concrete blocks have one or more hollow cavities, and their sides may be cast smooth or with a design.

Concrete construction

Concrete is a vital element and a vitally important thing that is used in several individual and commercial buildings. It solidifies and hardens after mixing with water and placement due to a chemical process known as hydration. It binds other building materials together. It is a material extensively used in the construction process and is made by mixing aggregate, cement, small stones, sand, gravel, and water. All the components bond together to create a stone-like material.

concrete contractors are among the most important stakeholders in most construction works. While some sustainable structures are made from pure wood and glass, most commercial and industrial buildings are still made from cement.

Brick masonry

Brick masonry is a highly durable form of construction. It is built by placing bricks in mortar in a systematic manner to construct solid mass that withstand exerted loads. There are several types of bricks and number of mortars which can be used to construct brick masonry.

Stone entryways

Maybe you’ve been thinking about beautifying your driveway entrance, but you’re unsure what material to choose. Natural stone is not only timelessly attractive, but it also offers several notable benefits.

  • Natural stone doesn’t require the same cleaning as other synthetic options.
  • It provides a more significant return on investment than most materials, considering comparable initial costs and property value increases.
  • Because natural stone isn’t manufactured, it’s more environmentally friendly than manufactured stone.
  • Genuine stone is durable and weather resistant. It does come from the earth, after all.

Fireplace construction and repair

New fireplace construction often includes the installation of terracotta flue liners to bring to code. This is because some older homes do not have clay flue liners and built with only brick and mortar.  Without having the chimney lined with flue tiles the chimneys are deemed unsafe and a potential fire hazard.

Patio construction and repair

Although you may not realize it at first, you will need a contractor to build or install your homes patio. Patios are complex structures that require the skills of a professional. Many factors are taken into consideration when building and installing a patio beyond simply pouring concrete and laying pavers. When installing a patio it is important to also consider the design, drainage system, and overall purpose. You may think this is something you can do yourself, however hiring a professional is the best way to handle this type of project.

Hiring a professional ensures not only an attractive outcome but also the quality materials your home deserves.

Pavers

Concrete pavers, often referred to as paving stones, are a popular outdoor flooring option. Similar to tiles, pavers are manufactured in specific shapes, sizes and colors and arrive on site ready to be installed. Pavers are most commonly installed over a compacted base of soil and sand. Because there isn’t any grout between the joints, concrete pavers offer a permeable surface that allows water to pass through. However, this also means that they may shift over time and that weeds could grow between the stones. Hiring a professional paver contractor to install your pavers, rather than laying them yourself, is the best way to protect your patio, driveway or sidewalk from these concerns.

Walkways

Sidewalks made of brick, stone, or even precast concrete have a lot of qualities that can make them both beneficial and problematic. This means you may wish to consider how your walk will be used before deciding to use masonry as the material. You will also want to check the local codes if building along a public road, as there may be restrictions. It should also be noted that there is a difference between paver bricks and wall bricks, the latter being a poor choice for walkways.

Retaining walls

Retaining walls make slopes more usable by flattening the slope and hindering water and soil from flowing downward. They can direct the flow of water in a direction you want it to go and prevent runoff from wearing down or eroding the landscape. They also serve an aesthetic purpose by making an area look neat and clearly defined.

Stone veneering and facades

Stone veneer is a form of siding that has the appearance of natural stone. It is made from a mixture of Portland cement, iron oxide pigments, and aggregates poured into a mold. It is often used as an accent siding option in modern homes.

The facade in construction is one of the factors necessary to ensure a longer life of the building. However, the advantages of facade systems in construction are not only to make the building long-lasting.

Although the features of facade systems vary according to the materials used in the wall system, all facade systems have some common features.

Facade systems are resistant to water and moisture. However, this durability may vary depending on the type of product selected. The water and moisture resistance ratio of the metal facade system and the water and moisture resistance of the styrofoam material are different from each other.

Facade systems have protective properties against both the building and the interior of the building against the radiation and UV rays. In other words, the coated faces of a building help the building to be healthier.

Structural walls and foundations

A structural or load-bearing wall is a wall that carries a significant portion of the weight of the building’s structure, from the roof and the upper floors down to the foundations. These walls keep your house standing, and careless removal of them would lead to severe structural damage, even collapse.

The foundation wall of a building may be a cast-in-place concrete retaining or basement wall or a structural wall complete with load-bearing pilasters. Materials used may be concrete or reinforced masonry. The foundation wall system may include an earth retention system of soldier piles and wood lagging or shotcreted rock requiring consideration of waterproofing applied to the earth retention system. For most portions of the foundation wall, water removal and control is of prime importance. However, water removal measures around foundation walls below the water table may be impractical and expensive over the long-term and the waterproofing strategy becomes critical. In the upper areas of the foundation wall thermal loading considerations must be addressed.

Fireplace

A fireplace is a safe place for a fire, lit to give off light and heat. Generally made of brick or stone, a fireplace includes a firebox to contain the fire, a chimney to channel smoke and toxic gas out of the space, and several other key elements.

Driveways

To ensure that your concrete driveway will look good for many years to come, there are important specifications your contractor should follow during installation. How well your driveway looks and performs long-term is largely related to the quality of workmanship and materials that go into it. To help ensure a problem-free driveway, use the following list for information about proper construction.
